DCE-MRI for Evaluating Treatment in Patients with Borderline Resectable Pancreatic Cancer

ClinicalTrials ID:NCT07705919

This study is testing if a special type of MRI scan, called DCE-MRI, can help doctors better assess how well treatment is working for patients with pancreatic cancer that might be removable by surgery.

Patient Parameters

Program Overview

This clinical trial is exploring the use of dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) to see if it can improve the way doctors evaluate treatment responses in patients with borderline resectable pancreatic cancer. This type of cancer involves important blood vessels near the pancreas, making surgery challenging. DCE-MRI uses a special dye to create detailed images of blood flow in the body, which can help show how the cancer is responding to treatment. By using DCE-MRI along with standard evaluations, doctors hope to get a clearer picture of how well the treatment is working.

Description

The main goal of this study is to see if using DCE-MRI can help improve the success rate of surgeries to remove pancreatic cancer by providing better information about the cancer's response to treatment.

Patients will receive a contrast dye through an IV and undergo a DCE-MRI scan before starting their standard treatment, which includes chemotherapy drugs like gemcitabine and nab-paclitaxel or a combination of fluorouracil, oxaliplatin, irinotecan, and leucovorin. About six weeks after starting treatment and again before surgery, patients will have another DCE-MRI scan. Throughout the study, patients will also have CT scans and blood tests to monitor their health and the cancer's response to treatment.

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must have a confirmed diagnosis of pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
  • Cancer must be classified as borderline resectable, meaning it involves certain blood vessels but might still be removable with surgery.
  • Must not have received any prior treatment for pancreatic cancer.
  • Must have adequate blood counts and organ function based on recent tests.
  • Women of childbearing potential must have a negative pregnancy test and agree to use contraception during the study.
  • Must be able to understand and agree to the study procedures.
  • Patients with controlled HIV or hepatitis infections may participate if certain conditions are met.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Evidence of cancer spread to distant parts of the body.
  • Significant heart disease or uncontrolled high blood pressure.
  • History of severe allergic reactions to study drugs.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women.
  • Any other serious medical condition that could interfere with the study.
  • History of another cancer, unless it has been treated and the patient has been cancer-free for at least two years.
