This clinical trial is exploring whether using a precise form of radiation therapy called stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) before surgery can help prevent the spread of cancer cells in the brain and improve surgical outcomes for patients with brain tumors.

Program Overview

The purpose of this study is to determine if treating brain tumors with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) before surgical removal can help stop cancer cells from spreading to other parts of the brain during surgery. This approach may lead to better results from the surgery and fewer complications afterward. In this study, only one brain tumor will be treated with SRS and then removed by surgery. If there are other brain tumors, they will not be removed in this study, but they may be treated with standard radiation if needed.

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Diagnosed with breast cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, melanoma, or gastrointestinal cancer, confirmed by lab tests or imaging.
  • Have at least one brain tumor that has not been treated with SRS or other focused radiation, and is planned for surgical removal. The tumor must be 6 cm or smaller.
  • No signs of cancer spreading to the fluid or lining around the brain, confirmed by symptoms, MRI scans, or spinal fluid tests.
  • No previous SRS treatment to the brain tumor planned for removal. Previous SRS to other brain tumors is allowed with approval.
  • No previous brain surgery involving opening the skull.
  • Age 18 or older.
  • Have a Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) score of 70 or higher, indicating the ability to care for oneself, and expected to live more than one year.
  • Able to undergo an MRI scan with contrast to view the brain.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Have had whole brain radiation therapy before.
  • Have unstable neurological conditions that require immediate surgery without waiting for SRS.
  • Determined by the study leader to be unable to follow study procedures or requirements.
