Study on How Hormone Therapy Before Surgery Affects Breast Cancer Treatment Outcomes

Sponsor: Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Sponsor score: 60

ClinicalTrials ID:NCT07483307

This study is examining whether hormone therapy given before surgery can improve surgical outcomes for patients with a specific type of breast cancer called invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC). The focus is on whether this treatment reduces the likelihood of cancer cells being found at the edges of the tissue removed during surgery.

Patient Parameters

Program Overview

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of hormone therapy given before surgery in patients with invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) who are undergoing breast-conserving surgery. Researchers want to find out if this approach can lower the risk of having cancer cells at the margins of the tissue removed during surgery, which is known as positive margins.

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Must provide written informed consent to participate.
  • Postmenopausal women aged 50 years or older.
  • Diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) and planning to have breast-conserving surgery.
  • Tumors must be estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2-), meaning:
    • ER+: At least 10% of tumor cells show estrogen receptor activity.
    • HER2-: Little to no HER2 protein is present in the tumor cells.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Previous breast cancer in the same breast.
  • Advanced regional disease or stage 4 cancer.
  • Patients who need chemotherapy before surgery, as determined by their doctor.
  • Patients who cannot have breast surgery due to inoperable or stage 4 cancer.
