This study is exploring whether a one-time colonoscopy can help reduce the risk of developing or dying from colorectal cancer in people aged 55-64. It involves participants from Nordic countries, the Netherlands, and Poland.

Program Overview
Colorectal cancer is a significant health issue in Western countries, often developing slowly from early lesions. Colonoscopy can find and remove these early lesions, potentially preventing cancer. While colonoscopy is a common screening method in the U.S. and some European countries, there haven't been large studies to prove its benefits. The NordICC study aims to fill this gap by examining if a single colonoscopy can lower the chances of getting or dying from colorectal cancer. The study involves 66,000 people aged 55-64 from Nordic countries, the Netherlands, and Poland. Of these, 22,000 will be invited for a one-time colonoscopy, while the remaining 44,000 will not receive any screening. The study will track cancer rates and deaths over 15 years, with a check-in at 10 years to see if the colonoscopy group has a 25% lower death rate from colorectal cancer compared to those not screened.
Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria
- People aged 55-64 living in the study areas are randomly selected from population records to join either the screening or control group.
- People living at the same address will be placed in the same group.
Exclusion Criteria
- People who have had previous colorectal surgery.
- Those needing long-term care or nursing services.
- Individuals currently receiving chemotherapy or radiation for cancer.
- People with severe heart or lung disease.
- Those on lifelong blood thinners like Warfarin.
- Anyone who had a heart attack or stroke requiring hospital care in the last 3 months.
- People living outside the country.
- If the invitation letter is returned unopened or if there is a report of the person's death.
