Study on Using Geriatric Assessment to Plan Treatment for Older Adults with Blood Disorders

Program Overview

The study aims to find out if using a geriatric assessment can lead to better treatment results for older adults (aged 60 and above) with blood disorders like acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes. The assessment looks at various aspects of health, such as thinking abilities, physical movement, mood, nutrition, and current medications, to help decide the best treatment plan. The study also wants to see if this approach can improve participants' quality of life, which will be measured through questionnaires.

Description

This study is testing a personalized approach to stem cell transplants for older adults based on their health needs identified through a geriatric assessment. The assessment helps determine how fit a patient is and guides the choice of treatment before the transplant.

• Less vulnerable or fitter patients may receive a stronger treatment plan called a myeloablative (MA) regimen.
• More vulnerable patients may receive a gentler treatment plan called a reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) or non-myeloablative (NMA) regimen.

The treatments may include various chemotherapy drugs like busulfan and fludarabine, radiation therapy, and other therapies like anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG).
