Program Overview
The study is testing a method called image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) to treat tumors in the bones and soft tissues of children. IGRT uses detailed images from CT, MRI, and PET scans to accurately locate tumors and plan radiation treatment. This approach helps doctors deliver radiation directly to the tumor while protecting healthy tissues nearby. The goal is to improve control over the tumors and reduce side effects from radiation.
Description
The main goals of this study are:
- To see how well IGRT controls tumors in children with bone and soft tissue cancers like Ewing's sarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, and other soft tissue sarcomas.
- To compare the effectiveness of IGRT with older radiation methods in treating these cancers.
- To track how tumors respond to IGRT over time and see if it helps keep the cancer under control for more than five years.
The study also looks at:
- How radiation affects normal tissues, including bones and muscles, over time.
- Whether radiation changes the growth of bones or causes thinning of bones.
- How radiation affects muscle size and function, and how these changes relate to blood flow and metabolism in the muscles.
Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria
- Children and young adults up to 25 years old.
- Have a bone or soft tissue tumor that needs radiation treatment.
- No previous radiation treatment at the tumor site, except for short emergency treatments.
- Negative pregnancy test for females who can have children.
- Patients will be grouped based on whether their cancer has spread.
- Can join the study if they need radiation as part of their treatment plan, which may include surgery or chemotherapy.
- Patients with recurring tumors or a second cancer can join if the current tumor site hasn't been treated with radiation before.
- Patients already in the study will be updated to the latest version of the study protocol.
