Study on Using a New Imaging Device to Guide Radiation Therapy for Basal Cell Carcinoma

Sponsor: Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Sponsor score: 60

ClinicalTrials ID:NCT05294120

This clinical trial is testing whether a new imaging device can help guide radiation therapy to effectively treat basal cell carcinoma, a common type of skin cancer. The study will also assess any side effects and changes in quality of life before and after treatment.

Patient Parameters

Program Overview

The aim of this study is to see if using a new imaging device, called the reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM)/optical coherence tomography (OCT) device, can help guide radiation therapy to treat basal cell carcinoma (BCC) effectively. Researchers will also monitor any side effects from this treatment and evaluate participants' quality of life by having them fill out questionnaires before and after the treatment.

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Have a confirmed diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma through a biopsy.
  • Up to three tumors can be treated at the same time or one after another.
  • Tumors must be classified as stage T1 or T2, according to specific medical guidelines.
  • Tumors must be 40 mm or smaller in size.
  • Tumors must not have deeply invaded tissues or nerves, or affected bones.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must be suitable for imaging with the RCM/OCT device and for receiving radiation therapy, as determined by the study doctor.
  • Must be able to complete quality of life questionnaires in English or Spanish.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Have a medical condition that makes radiation therapy unsafe, as determined by the study doctor.
  • Have had previous cancer treatments that make it unsafe to receive more radiation therapy.
  • Are unlikely to follow the study procedures or attend follow-up appointments, as determined by the study doctor.
