Description
This clinical trial is for patients with blood cancers or disorders who need a stem cell transplant but do not have a fully matched donor. Typically, stem cells from umbilical cord blood are used, but they can take a long time to grow and may lead to extended hospital stays. This study uses a new method called haplo-cord transplantation, which combines stem cells from a family member and umbilical cord blood. The aim is to speed up recovery and reduce the need for transfusions. Over time, the family member's cells are replaced by the cord blood cells. The study will focus on matching specific antigens to improve outcomes, rather than just the number of cells. This approach has shown promising results in previous cases.
Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria
- Must have a confirmed diagnosis of one of the following:
- Relapsed or hard-to-treat acute leukemia
- Acute leukemia in first remission but at high risk of coming back
- Chronic myelogenous leukemia in various stages
- Recurrent or hard-to-treat lymphoma or Hodgkin lymphoma
- Chronic lymphocytic leukemia with poor prognosis
- Multiple myeloma
- Myelodysplastic syndrome
- Chronic myeloproliferative disease
- Blood disorders like hemoglobinopathies
- Aplastic anemia
- Other blood disorders needing a transplant
- Age 18 or older
- Likely to benefit from a transplant according to the doctor
- No fully matched donor available in time
- Good overall health with a performance status of 70% or higher
- Acceptable organ function based on specific blood tests
- Able to understand and sign a consent form
Exclusion Criteria
- Life expectancy is very limited due to other illnesses or infections
- Severe heart or lung problems
- Chronic active hepatitis or liver cirrhosis
- Uncontrolled HIV
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
