Program Overview

The study is investigating a new method of radiation therapy guided by MRI to treat high-risk prostate cancer. This approach uses higher doses of radiation over a shorter period, targeting the prostate and pelvic lymph nodes more precisely. The goal is to reduce the overall treatment time and lessen side effects compared to traditional methods.

Description

The main goal of this study is to assess the long-term side effects on the urinary system after treatment. Researchers will also look at short-term side effects, survival rates, cancer recurrence, and quality of life.

Participants will receive MRI-guided radiation therapy and standard hormone therapy. They may also have additional scans and blood tests throughout the study.

After finishing the treatment, participants will have follow-up visits every 3 months for the first 2 years, and then every 6 months for a total of 4 years.

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Have a confirmed diagnosis of prostate cancer that is localized to the prostate.
  • No cancer spread to pelvic lymph nodes or other parts of the body.
  • Classified as high-risk prostate cancer based on specific medical criteria.
  • Able to undergo long-term hormone therapy.
  • Have a good overall health status with a performance score above 70.
  • No previous radiation treatment to the pelvis.
  • Willing to attend follow-up visits and participate in quality of life assessments.
  • Must be able to speak and read English.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Cancer has spread beyond the prostate or to the pelvic area.
  • Life expectancy is less than 2 years.
  • Previous radiation therapy or prostate surgery.
  • Previous prostate surgery that involved removing tissue through the urethra.
  • Severe urinary symptoms that cannot be managed with hormone therapy.
  • Known urinary blockages or strictures.
  • Any medical condition that makes radiation therapy unsafe, such as inflammatory bowel disease.
