Program Overview
The purpose of this study is to find out if the drugs ramucirumab or merestinib, when used with chemotherapy drugs cisplatin and gemcitabine, can effectively treat advanced or metastatic biliary tract cancer. The study will also evaluate the safety of these treatments.
Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria
- Must be in good general health with an activity level that allows for light work or better.
- Must have a confirmed diagnosis of biliary tract cancer that cannot be removed by surgery, has come back, or has spread to other parts of the body.
- Must have cancer that can be measured by standard medical tests.
- Must have proper bile drainage and good organ function.
- Must be sterile, postmenopausal, or agree to use effective birth control.
- Women who can have children must test negative for pregnancy before starting the study.
- Must agree to provide blood and tumor samples for research purposes.
Exclusion Criteria
- Cannot have had previous treatment for advanced or metastatic cancer.
- Cannot have a history of severe liver problems or fluid buildup in the abdomen.
- Cannot have had recent severe kidney problems.
- Cannot have had major surgery or serious injury recently.
- Cannot plan to have major surgery during the study.
- Cannot have cancer that has spread to the brain or spinal cord.
- Cannot have had recent serious heart or blood vessel problems.
- Cannot have uncontrolled high blood pressure.
- Cannot have had another cancer within the last 5 years.
- Cannot have had recent serious digestive system problems.
- Cannot be allergic to any study medications.
- Cannot have certain blood clotting disorders.
- Cannot have uncontrolled health conditions that pose a high risk.
- Cannot have mixed types of liver and bile duct cancer.
- Cannot have certain heart rhythm problems.
