Program Overview

The aim of this study is to see how well proton therapy can control tumors and what side effects it might cause in patients whose head and neck cancer has come back after previous treatment.

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Must be willing and able to provide written consent to participate.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must have a confirmed diagnosis of recurrent or new head and neck cancer.
  • Must have had previous radiation treatment to the head and neck area.
  • The cancer must be inoperable, or the patient chooses not to have surgery. Patients who have had surgery and need further radiation are also eligible.
  • Men and women who can have children must agree to use effective birth control during treatment and for at least 3 months afterward.
  • Patients with less than 6 months to live will receive palliative treatment, while those expected to live longer will receive full-dose re-irradiation. Other factors like poor health, large or widespread tumors, and other serious health issues will also determine the treatment approach.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Unable to follow study procedures or attend follow-up appointments.
  • Less than 6 months since the last radiation treatment before starting proton therapy.
