Study on Using Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) for Patients with Metastatic Breast and Lung Cancers

Sponsor: Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Sponsor score: 60

ClinicalTrials ID:NCT03808662

This clinical trial is exploring whether using a precise form of radiation therapy, called stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), can help slow down the progression of metastatic breast and lung cancers when the tumors start to grow again.

Patient Parameters

Program Overview

The aim of this study is to find out if applying a targeted radiation treatment, known as stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), can extend the time before the disease worsens in patients whose metastatic breast or lung cancer tumors have begun to grow again.

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Able to understand and agree to participate in the study.
  • Have metastatic breast or lung cancer confirmed by imaging and lab tests.
  • For breast cancer: Must have triple negative breast cancer or other high-risk breast cancer that has progressed despite treatment.
  • For lung cancer: Must have non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) without certain genetic mutations, or with specific mutations that have progressed after targeted therapy.
  • Must have received at least one prior treatment for cancer.
  • Previous immunotherapy or radiation therapy is allowed.
  • Can have more than 5 metastases, but only 1-5 can be actively growing.
  • Must have certain medical conditions that prevent participation in other drug trials, such as active liver disease or a history of autoimmune disease.
  • Must have measurable disease progression in up to 5 lesions, as defined by specific medical criteria.
  • All growing tumor sites must be treatable with radiation.
  • No limit on the total number of metastases.
  • Brain metastases can be treated before joining the study.
  • Any urgent symptoms requiring radiation can be treated before joining the study.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Cannot be pregnant.
  • Cannot have leptomeningeal disease (cancer spread to the membranes around the brain and spinal cord).
  • Cannot have serious medical conditions that prevent radiation therapy, like certain genetic disorders.
  • Any other condition that the study doctor believes makes participation inappropriate.
