Study on the Effects of Sulforaphane from Vegetables in Preventing Melanoma in People with a History of Melanoma

This clinical trial is exploring whether sulforaphane, a natural compound found in broccoli sprouts, can help prevent melanoma in people who have had melanoma before. Participants will take either sulforaphane or a placebo for a year and visit the clinic every three months for checkups.

Program Overview

The purpose of this study is to see if taking sulforaphane, a compound found in broccoli sprouts, can help reduce the risk of developing melanoma in people who have had melanoma in the past. Participants will take either sulforaphane or a placebo for 12 months and visit the clinic every three months for checkups and tests. They will also keep a calendar to track when they take their tablets.

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Have at least 3 atypical moles that meet specific criteria, such as being at least 5mm in size and having certain features like uneven borders or color.
  • Have had an early-stage melanoma diagnosis, such as melanoma in situ or stage I-III melanoma, with a low risk of relapse.
  • Not currently receiving targeted or immunotherapy treatments for melanoma.
  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Be able to understand and sign a consent form, or have a representative to assist if needed.
  • HIV-positive patients can participate if their viral load is undetectable with treatment.
  • Patients with hepatitis B or C can join if their viral load is undetectable with treatment.
  • Patients with other cancers can participate if it doesn't affect the study's safety or effectiveness.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Must not be pregnant.
  • Must not have an allergy to cruciferous vegetables like broccoli.
  • Must not take other sulforaphane supplements during the study.
  • Must not be on systemic treatment for melanoma.
