Program Overview

The HEARTS trial is testing a new radiation therapy method, MR-guided adaptive radiation therapy (MRgART), to see how it compares to the standard radiation treatment using a linear accelerator (LINAC) for people with cancer in the chest area near the heart. The study will look at how each treatment affects the heart, using MRI scans, blood tests, and quality of life surveys. Participants will receive radiation therapy, have MRI scans and bloodwork done, and fill out questionnaires about their quality of life.

Description

The HEARTS trial is a study comparing two types of radiation therapy for people with cancer in the chest area near the heart. One method uses MR-guided adaptive radiation therapy (MRgART) that aims to protect the heart, while the other is the standard x-ray based radiation therapy using a linear accelerator (LINAC). The study will monitor changes in heart function over time using MRI scans, quality of life surveys, heart activity measurements, and blood tests. The goal is to see if the new method affects the heart differently than the standard treatment.

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Must be over 18 years old.
  • Must meet specific radiation dose criteria for the heart.
  • Must have a confirmed diagnosis of certain types of cancer in the chest area, including:
    • Stage IIIA, IIIB, or IIIC non-operable non-small cell lung cancer
    • Stage I-III esophageal or esophagogastric cancer
    • Stage II or III thymoma or thymic carcinoma
    • Other cancers in the chest area that meet the study's criteria.
  • Must have a planned course of radiation therapy with at least 15 treatment sessions.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Have cancer that has spread to other parts of the body with a life expectancy of less than 12 months.
  • Have had previous radiation therapy to the chest that overlaps significantly with the heart area.
  • Cannot have an MRI for any reason.
  • Have severe heart problems classified as New York Heart Association Class III or IV.
