Program Overview
The main goal of this program is to provide access to stem cell transplants for patients who don't have a fully matched sibling donor. These patients have serious or life-threatening conditions that require a transplant. The program is for those who can't participate in other approved programs at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia that use a specific technology for preparing donor cells.
Description
Only about 25-30% of patients who need a stem cell transplant have a fully matched donor in their family. Sometimes, using unrelated cord blood isn't possible because of size or matching issues, or if a less intense treatment is needed. The risk of severe complications, like graft vs. host disease (GVHD), is higher when using unrelated or partially matched donors. At the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, there is a lot of experience in using these types of donors with special techniques to reduce the risk of severe GVHD.
Eligibility Criteria
Exclusion Criteria
- Have uncontrolled infections caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi
- Have a fully matched sibling donor (in some special cases, fully matched related donors, including siblings, may be considered)
- Have a donor who cannot donate peripheral stem cells
- Are pregnant
