Study Comparing I-124 PET/CT Scans for Diagnosing Thyroid Cancer
Sponsor: Thomas Hope
ClinicalTrials ID:NCT06961084
This clinical trial is testing a new imaging method using I-124 PET/CT scans to see if it can better detect thyroid cancer that has spread, compared to the usual imaging methods.

Program Overview
The study aims to find out if a new type of scan, called I-124 PET/CT, can more accurately detect thyroid cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. This will be compared to the standard imaging methods currently used, which involve I-123 and I-131 scans. Participants will receive a single I-124 PET/CT scan and will be monitored for a few days afterward to check for any side effects. Some participants will have additional scans to gather more detailed information.
Description
The main goals of this study are to see how well the I-124 PET/CT scan can identify thyroid cancer that has spread, compared to the usual I-123 SPECT scan. Researchers will also look at how consistent the results are between different doctors reading the scans, and how safe the I-124 PET/CT scan is for patients. They will also compare how well the I-124 PET/CT scan detects cancer compared to other scans done after treatment.
Participants will have one I-124 PET/CT scan and will be followed up by phone for a few days to check for any side effects. Some participants will have additional scans to measure how much radiation the cancer absorbs. Information from other scans will be collected from the participants' medical records for comparison.
Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Have a confirmed diagnosis of differentiated thyroid cancer with concerns that it may have spread.
- This could be based on cancer seen in previous scans or elevated thyroglobulin levels after thyroid removal.
- Participants with undetectable thyroglobulin levels can join if they have thyroglobulin antibodies.
- Must have a planned I-123 imaging within 45 days of joining the study.
- Must be able to understand and sign a written consent form.
Exclusion Criteria
- Unable to follow the study procedures or judged by the study doctor as not suitable for participation.
- Known to be pregnant, according to the institution's policy.
