The study is investigating a new radiation treatment called proton-based stereotactic radiation therapy (SBRT) for kidney cancer. This treatment aims to target the cancer more precisely, potentially reducing damage to healthy kidney tissue and other nearby organs. Researchers want to see if this approach can help control the cancer while preserving kidney function and improving overall survival.
Description
Kidney cancer cases have been rising, and surgery is usually the main treatment. However, not all patients can have surgery due to other health issues or technical challenges. Alternatives include monitoring the cancer, freezing it (cryotherapy), using heat (microwave or radiofrequency ablation), or radiation therapy. Traditional radiation has helped control kidney cancer but can harm kidney function, sometimes leading to dialysis. Proton therapy is a newer method that targets the tumor more precisely, sparing healthy tissues like the kidneys, bowels, spine, and liver. This study aims to see if proton-based SBRT can effectively treat kidney cancer while minimizing damage to the kidneys.
Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria
- Adults aged 18 or older.
- Diagnosed with kidney cancer through a biopsy.
- No signs of cancer spreading to other parts of the body.
- Not suitable for surgery or other local treatments.
- Able to have an MRI or a CT scan with contrast dye.
Exclusion Criteria
- Previous radiation treatment that overlaps with the current treatment area.
- Cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
- Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the study.
