Program Overview
The study aims to find out if using SABR along with standard cancer treatments can help patients with cancers that have spread to up to 10 different areas live longer without the disease getting worse. Researchers will compare the results of patients receiving SABR plus standard treatments to those receiving standard treatments alone. They will also look at overall survival, safety, and potential markers that might predict who benefits most from SABR.
Description
This study focuses on patients with cancers that have spread to a few areas, known as oligometastatic cancer. Typically, when cancer spreads, it becomes harder to cure, and treatments aim to prolong life. However, these treatments can become less effective over time. SABR is a precise form of radiation therapy that targets visible tumors and may help delay cancer progression, improving quality of life. While previous studies have shown SABR can be beneficial, they were small and not randomized. This larger, randomized study will provide more reliable information on how effective and safe SABR is for patients with limited cancer spread.
Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria
- Must provide signed consent to participate.
- Willing to follow all study procedures and be available for the study duration.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Eligible for standard cancer treatments and SABR, meaning they are in good health and expected to tolerate the treatment.
- Must have a confirmed diagnosis of a solid tumor cancer.
- Have between one and ten cancer spots that can be seen on scans, with at least one outside the brain.
- Women who can become pregnant must use effective birth control starting one month before the study and during treatment.
- Men must use condoms or other effective birth control methods with partners during treatment.
Exclusion Criteria
- Pregnant women cannot participate.
- Cannot have conditions that make radiation unsafe, such as certain lung diseases if chest radiation is needed, or specific autoimmune diseases.
- Cannot have had previous radiation in the same area that would exceed safe limits.
- Cannot have fluid buildup in the chest or abdomen due to cancer.
- Cannot have cancer spread to the brain's protective layers.
- Cannot have cancer in areas that cannot be safely treated with SABR.
- Cannot have any untreated cancer spot larger than 5 cm, or larger than 3 cm in the brain.
