Program Overview
Thyroid nodules are common, and the rates of thyroid cancer have been rising. It's important to accurately evaluate these nodules to avoid unnecessary procedures. Shear Wave Elastography (SWE) is a new ultrasound method that helps measure the stiffness of thyroid tissue. This technique uses sound waves to create a color-coded image showing softer tissue in blue and stiffer tissue in red. The study aims to see how well SWE can distinguish between non-cancerous and cancerous thyroid nodules across multiple centers. It also seeks to find the best measurement values for this technique and assess its usefulness for nodules that are uncertain after a fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy.
Description
The study is focused on using Shear Wave Elastography (SWE) to improve the diagnosis of thyroid nodules. SWE is a new ultrasound method that helps determine if a thyroid nodule is benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) by measuring tissue stiffness. The main goals are:
- To evaluate how well SWE can identify benign and malignant thyroid nodules in a study involving multiple centers.
- To determine the best measurement values for SWE in this setting.
Additionally, the study will look at how useful SWE is for nodules that are uncertain after a fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy.
Eligibility Criteria
Exclusion Criteria
- Patients who do not want to or cannot give consent to participate.
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Thyroid nodules that have calcification covering more than half of the nodule.
- Patients who have had surgery, FNA, or thermal ablation on the same side of the thyroid.
- Patients with serious heart or lung diseases.
