Description
This study is exploring a new way to deliver radiation therapy for lung cancer that is located near the center of the chest. The treatment involves giving a lower dose of radiation over three sessions, which is different from the usual approach. The study will include 36 patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and will compare their results to those from previous studies that used different treatment schedules. Researchers will look at how well the cancer is controlled, how long patients survive without the cancer getting worse, and overall survival rates. They will also report on the outcomes for patients with lung metastases.
Additionally, the study will assess how this shorter treatment schedule affects patients' quality of life and any side effects they experience from the radiation. This information will help determine if the new approach is a safe and effective option for treating lung cancer near the center of the chest.
Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria
- Lung tumors must be 5 cm or smaller and located near the center of the chest, close to major airways or organs like the heart or major blood vessels.
- Patients can have more than one tumor, but at least one must meet the location criteria.
- Patients must be in good overall health, with an ECOG performance status of 0 to 2.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Patients must agree to participate and sign a consent form specific to the study.
Exclusion Criteria
- Previous radiation treatment near the target area that overlaps with the new treatment fields.
- No active infections in the body, lungs, or around the heart.
- No lung diseases like interstitial pneumonia or severe lung scarring.
- No serious heart conditions, such as recent heart attacks or severe heart failure.
- Cannot be pregnant or breastfeeding.
- No other medical conditions that would prevent participation in the study, as determined by the study doctor.
