Program Overview
The aim of this study is to find out if using a laser to treat small papillary thyroid cancer (PTMC) is a safe and effective option instead of surgery. This method, called percutaneous laser ablation (PLA), involves using a laser to target and destroy the cancer cells in the thyroid.
Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Have papillary thyroid cancer confirmed by:
- (a) Specific test results known as Bethesda VI cytology, or
- (b) Bethesda III, IV, V, or VI cytology along with a specific gene mutation (BRAF V600E), or
- (c) Bethesda V cytology with high-risk features seen on an ultrasound.
- The cancer must be 13 mm or smaller in size.
- Have chosen not to undergo active surveillance (regular monitoring without immediate treatment).
- The thyroid tumor must be mostly solid, with no more than 25% being fluid-filled.
- No signs of the cancer spreading beyond the thyroid gland.
- No signs of cancer spreading to lymph nodes on imaging tests.
- Normal function of the vocal cords on the opposite side of the thyroid before the laser treatment.
Exclusion Criteria
- Have a type of thyroid cancer other than papillary thyroid cancer.
- Have a thyroid tumor that is more than 25% fluid-filled.
- Have signs of the cancer spreading beyond the thyroid gland.
- Have signs of cancer spreading to lymph nodes.
- Are pregnant.
