This study is exploring whether proton beam radiation therapy can reduce side effects compared to the standard photon beam radiation therapy for children with rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of cancer.

Program Overview

The study aims to find out if using proton beam radiation therapy can lessen the side effects of radiation treatment for rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of cancer. Unlike the standard photon beam radiation, which passes through the body and affects healthy tissue, proton beam radiation stops at the tumor, potentially reducing damage to healthy tissue.

Description

  • A special device, like a mask or foam cradle, will be made for each child to help them stay still during treatment.
  • Radiation treatments will be given once a day, five days a week, for four to six weeks, depending on the required dose for the tumor.
  • Children will have weekly check-ups with their radiation doctor to monitor their health and any side effects.
  • After completing radiation treatments, children will need to have tests and evaluations for several years to track their progress.

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Children diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma through a biopsy.
  • Age 21 or younger.
  • Must be receiving a standard chemotherapy treatment.
  • Cannot have cancer that has spread, unless they are aged 2-10 with a specific type of rhabdomyosarcoma.
  • Must agree to follow-up care for at least five years after treatment, with annual visits unless it's too difficult to return. In such cases, they must allow their medical information to be shared for tracking results.
  • Radiation must start within 35 days of the last chemotherapy or surgery, according to the study protocol.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Life expectancy of less than two years.
  • Health conditions that make radiation too risky, like serious injuries or certain diseases.
  • Pregnant patients.
  • Previous radiation therapy.
